The saga surrounding Zwelinzima Vavi’s sex scandal from an ethical point of view… Was it right for him to have sexual relations with his female employees?
This essay will elaborate on whether Zwelinzima Vavi was right to have sexual relations with his female employee. Zwelinzima Vavi is General Secretary of Congress of South Africa Trade unions, and Vice-Chairperson. He holds a respectable position for which he was suspended from it due to the sex scandal with his employee. This is embarrassing for someone who holds such a powerful position within the society
To a larger extent Zwelinzima was in the wrong to even have a sexual relation with his employee. In the sense that he should have been aware that having an affair with one of his workers could have a bad out turn in the near future because for every decision one makes it has its consequences. Vavi was accused of raping a 26 year old colleague who claims Vavi offered her a job at COSATU without proper requirements procedure.
He confessed to sexual involvement with the employee and gave a confession in detail but denies the rape allegations. Although it should be noted that the lady had a part to play in allowing Vavi to go that far in having a sexual relationship. Women need to be emncipated on how they no longer have to give sexual favours for a position in society.
He goes on to accuse the women saying that it was blackmail and he was being set up because his fellow’s political members wanted him out of power. From an ethical point of view if Vavi knew that his fellow members wanted him off his position as he says he should have known that he could have been attacked in many ways and should have been prepared, having an affair just proved that Vavi does not value his beliefs and moral.
Zwelinzima’s should have had a relationship that is laden with moral responsibilities. From an ethical point of view, an employee does not think of employees only as a means to an end. The employee-employer relationship operates in the context of business; there is a tendency to play by different rules dictated by who has the leverage, and principles of expediency which you could get away with rather than moral principles.
The Congress of South African Trade Union (COSATU).General secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, says the 26 year old woman, who accused him of rape withdrew the charge 2hours into the labour federations internal grievance process. Vavi made this public via twitter. The SABC understand, from sources that the woman, Vavi’s colleague, was unable to answer many of the question related. Vavi insists that he had not raped the 26 year old woman, but had an extra marital affair with the woman. (www.sabc.co.za).
Vavi should have not have done it for it brought him to shame for his actions even though he is not the only one to blame. From an ethical point of view both Vavi and the lady lost touch of their roots and values for they both destroyed their relationships whether the affair was to go public or not.
